Strengthening Communities - SA
The Strengthening Communities program assists disadvantaged communities and groups to improve life and social skills, to overcome and adapt to life challenges and crises, and to take greater control over their own lives.
We do this by developing and delivering free community education programs that are specially catered to groups’ needs.
We try to use creative, outside-the-square approaches to make programs relevant, interesting and culturally responsive.
Topics include anything that is relevant to the community group. Examples include exploring identity, improving communication skills, learning peer education skills and creating life goals. Participants have the opportunity to build confidence, resilience, support networks and to improve their skills.
Our Philosophy and Aim
Strengthening Communities is underpinned by a commitment to social justice and a belief that the capacities of communities can be built by developing their human and social capital.
We aim:
- To build stronger communities
- To enhance people’s capacities to engage with their communities
- To reduce the sense of social isolation experienced by some people
- To provide opportunities for people to regain life skills and a sense of self worth
- To learn more about issues that affect their lives, and how these issues can be addressed.
Nationally Recognised Training
We can align our programs to nationally recognised qualifications, if requested, which can lead to formal qualifications and improved employment options. For more information, please speak to us about this.
Who Can Use Strengthening Communities?
Strengthening Communities is for groups and communities who face considerable disadvantages including:
- People whose health is disadvantaged (for example, people who are young, Indigenous, are a refugee, from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, unemployed, homeless, or are in correctional institutions)
- People with mental health or disability-related problems
- People who have experienced sexual abuse
- Families including children and parents who are experiencing domestic violence, as well as the perpetrators of this violence
- People living in poverty or social isolation.
Hearing and language interpreters are available upon request.
