A range of individual and group support programs are offered in several regions to address and prevent family violence.  Our services are directed at ensuring everyone has the right to feel safe and free from abuse in their own home - whether that abuse involves hitting, threats, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, or any other controlling or coercive behaviour. They are designed for people experiencing any kind of family violence - to help them towards safety, and for people who are committing these acts of abuse - to help them to stop.

Family violence has serious consequences. It usually starts with small insults, and can build up to the point where serious injury occurs. It has serious effects, not only in the lives of the people involved, but also upon the lives of any children who observe violence or abuse occurring.

Family violence is against the law.

Abusive behaviours are often passed from one generation to the next, so stopping the violence in your own home now will help prevent your children from experiencing violence in their homes when they are adults.

What you can expect when you contact us

We will treat you with dignity and respect.

When you phone us, we will arrange a face to face interview with a family violence prevention worker, or refer you to the most suitable service.

Our worker will help you to understand your situation, and to take the first steps towards change. Our first concern is always to make sure that everybody in your family is safe. Often it takes some time before patterns of abuse in a family can change. Our worker will talk about the groups we have available both for people who have been abused, and for people who are behaving abusively and want to change. We will give you details about the cost of the service.

Relationship Change when there is violence or abuse

Experience has taught us that groups of men and groups of women, working with a skilled and experienced facilitator, can provide the kind of support which helps people to achieve long-term change in stopping violence in the relationship and create a new relationship based on non-violence and respect.

For programs for people who have experienced violence or abuse, or have committed violence and abuse and want to stop and for people seeking help for children who have witnessed violence or abuse contact your local Relationships Australia (Qld) office. Or you can contact the Crisis Line of dvconnect on 1800 811 811.
