The process of adjustment to living in a newly 'blended' family can be demanding and stressful. It can involve:

  • coping with emotional upheaval from the break-up of the previous marriage or partnership
  • confusion over new family roles and relationships
  • resentment and rejection from children - and sometimes adults, as well
  • different family lifestyles and expectations around standards such as discipline
  • pressure on the couple relationship, such as lack of time alone and financial constraints
  • learning to share parenting with someone outside the family.

Most stepfamilies encounter some of these difficulties and meeting the challenge may at times seem quite daunting. However, given time and with support and information, problems can be resolved.
