Family Dispute Resolution Services - TAS

Relationships Australia Tasmania has a Family Dispute Resolution Service (formerly known as the Family Mediation Service) which was established in 1993 and is funded and approved by the Australian Government.  The Family Dispute Resolution Service operates from two locations, Hobart and Launceston.

Couples who are separating or have separated and need to make decisions about children and/or property and financial matters can receive prompt, impartial and expert assistance from our family dispute resolution practitioners (mediators).  Our mediators are highly trained in family dispute resolution and generally use a co-mediation model which means that two mediators will be involved in the process.

The aim of our family dispute resolution service is to support and assist people in problem-solving and identifying solutions which will lead to agreements.  It is seen as an effective, economical and less stressful alternative to the legal process and going to court.

Family dispute resolution endeavours to help separating parents reach agreements that are in the best interests of their children.  Information in relation to the children is able to be included as part of the decision-making process by engaging one of our child consultants to meet with the children and then provide feedback to the parents as to the children's wishes.  Parenting plans can be developed in family dispute resolution to give parents certainty around their parenting arrangements and the opportunity to review those arrangements in the future.

Relationships Australia Tasmania and its team of mediators are registered as family dispute resolution providers and are able to issue certificates required under the Family Law Act 1975 for participation in compulsory family dispute resolution in relation to parenting arrangements.
