Family and Relationship Counselling - TAS

Counselling services to assist Tasmanian individuals, couples and families to improve their relationships.

Counselling can help couples to:

  • understand the relationship they have
  • discover why they chose each other in the first place
  • find out what they wanted from their relationship and from each other
  • understand how they contributed to whatever their relationship has become
  • discuss what they feel about each other now
  • discuss what they are prepared to do to make it work
  • identify stressors on the relationship and explore ways to manage these

Counsellors do not make judgements on who is right or wrong, they don’t tell clients what to do and they don’t try to persuade people to stay together or separate but assist each party to understand and express their own position.

Counselling for Separation/Divorce

Counselling can assist separating and/or divorcing couples and individuals to deal with their grief and anger to enable them to move on with a new sense of purpose and optimism. This includes looking at:

  • how relationships change
  • how to bear with and manage the grief and anger
  • what real acceptance is and how it can assist adjustment
  • discovering a pathway for your separation
  • identifying issues for children
  • co-parenting after separation
  • establishing new family relationships where children have homes with each parent
  • learning to be "single"
  • being able to face moving on to a new and sustaining relationship.

Counselling and working through the problems of separation with someone who has no involvement or investment in the outcome can help people get through this difficult time.

Indigenous Counselling

We receive funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing to employ a Mental Health Worker in the COAG trial site to provide counselling in the North of the state to Aboriginal people, particularly youth at risk.

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Counselling

The CALD Bridges Program currently supports African Australians with relationship issues.

The program facilitates monthly dialogue meetings with key members of communities and with service providers to explore how to best support communities and disseminate information.

We also offer an African Australian men’s education group as well as parenting sessions to strengthen families in a new country.

Gambling Counselling

The Break Even services for gambling related problems provide free information, education and support for anyone affected by problem gambling. The services are tailored to suit the person’s needs and include individual and family counselling, group support and self-exclusions from gambling venues. Counselling and group sessions are conducted by experienced staff, trained in the area of problem gambling.

The services aim to reduce the harm associated with problem gambling for individuals, their partners and family members, through supporting the client’s desired changes relating to problem gambling behaviours and other related problems.

Our approach is to focus on the needs of our clients, respecting each person’s choice, allowing them to decide what they want to discuss and their desired outcomes.

Strategies used may include individual, relationship and family counselling, as well as facilitated group support meetings and self-exclusions.

Counselling is available at Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and North East locations of Relationships Australia Tasmania.

The Break Even services are offered in partnership with Anglicare Tasmania and are funded by the Tasmanian Government through the Community Support Levy.
