Are there any courses or services to help me cope with splitting up with my partner?

Back to FAQ List

When a couple or an individual decide that they need to separate they are faced with many difficult issues:

  • coping with the separation process itself
  • sorting out the money and property issues
  • making arrangements for the care of children.

As separation involves making changes to so many aspects of their lives, people find the journey to a new life, home and relationship very difficult. This is true even if the parties are amicable about the need for the separation and how they should address it.

Relationship support is available:

Counselling can help you to be clear about the decision to separate or not, if you are not sure. It can also help you cope with the changes that separation will bring to your relationship and your life in general.

Family Dispute Resolution can help you make practical arrangements and decisions about your separation, especially around the care of children and property settlements.

Relationship Skills Courses

If you need support and want to hear what other people do to cope with separation, a variety of courses are available. Some groups are for both men and women and some are single sex. These groups are valuable in helping the adjustment to being single and coming to terms with new relationships. Other courses are run for children to help them deal with their feelings and experiences when their parents separate.

Each state or territory has compiled its own set of courses and seminars which are responsive to the needs of the community.
