Can you help my partner and I stop fighting?

Back to FAQ List

You can think about attending a counselling session together to resolve some of the issues that are affecting your relationship or you could attend one of our Relationship Skills Courses that deal with issues such as managing conflict.

Counselling

The role of our counselling programs is to help couples and families to find their own answers.

Counsellors do not make judgements on who is right or wrong, they don't tell clients what to do and they don't try to persuade people to stay married or together, if that is not what both individuals want.

Counselling aims to help improve relationships by helping couples to:

  • understand the relationship they have
  • discover why they chose each other in the first place
  • find out what they wanted from their relationship and from each other
  • understand how they contributed to whatever their relationship has become
  • discuss what they feel about each other now
  • find out what they are prepared to do to make it work.

Depending on the availability of counselling services in your area, you can make a booking during business hours, in the evening or on a Saturday morning. Please be aware that if you wish to attend an evening or Saturday morning session, there will probably be a waiting list as these sessions are the most sought after.

The fees for counselling sessions vary slightly across different states and territories and are either a fixed rate, or else determined on a sliding scale based on gross household income and number of dependents.  We do have a surcharge on most after-hours appointments and weekend times.

For more information on the counselling service or to book an appointment, please contact your nearest Relationships Australia office.

Developing Relationship Skills

Couples, individuals and families participate in relationship courses and seminars to learn relationship skills, get support and to explore similar relationship experiences with others; to get advice from others about what works for them in their relationship; and because they care about their relationships. Also, it can be fun!

All courses are facilitated by professional group leaders who are experienced and skilled to run the courses.

Each state or territory has compiled its own set of Relationship Skills courses and seminars which are responsive to the needs of the community.
